Lee Kalt at Dune/Axe Lounge

spye hampton has just learned that DJ Lee Kalt will be spinning live, Sunday from 10pm - whenever at Dune/Axe Lounge.  Lee's eclectic style of mixing house, lounge, trance, rock and hip hop have fostered his rapid rise as one of the most revered DJs in the hemisphere.  Using Le Souk, in alphabet city, as a springboard to stardom, he now frequently tours Ibiza, Europe and the Middle East.  He also maintains a strong fan-base in South America.

THIS is precisely what Dune/Axe Lounge needs, as a revitalization tonic for their Hamptons punch!

What does $10,000 get you?

What does $10,000 get you at last weekend's charity event for the prestigious and exclusive Ross School:

A table at Rao's (dinner not included).  Clearly the attendees saw money as no object--a healthy trait to bring to a charity function.  That's right, during the auction some heavy hitters shelled out 10 stacks of high society for the privelege of landing a table at one of Manhattan's most renowned restaurants.  Ok, ok, so they only have ten tables and one seating per night, but the generosity is still impressive.

Last weekend, the Ross School (above) raised over $500,000, charging corporations, entrepreneurs and celebs $15,000/table.

Traffic streamed (steadily) between East Hampton and Southampton all weekend and most venues were booked.  Various celebs were sighted at SL East.  South Pointe has gained notable ground, since DJ Avicii's appearance and may pan-out to be a place to be for 20-somethings, on Friday nights.

Dune/Axe lounge is holding steady with popular Saturday night parties, however Fridays (below) are a struggle.  This is not an unfamiliar characteristic, which once beleaguered the addresses previous club, Jet East.

To the manager...

...of a certain restaurant in the Springs.  Spyehampton is looking forward to profiling your establishment after chauffeuring your stranded-arse home at 3am on Saturday.  A thank you in advance for the complimentary dinner :-)

Cheers mate!

Profile: "Nobu at the Beach"

spye hampton has confirmed an interview with the infamous and energetic owner of Nobu - Southampton (aka. "Nobu at the Beach") and while that interview is pending, let us recap a stellar and star-studded weekend!

Despite a deliberately slow start to the summer, Nobu has gained traction as a Southampton nightlife staple item and in very short order.  Confidence amongst the owners and managers, coupled with the steadfast sanguinity of the Nobu brand, has cooked up a recipe for Hamptons success.  This weekend was accented by the patronage of Matt Lauer, Howard Stern and chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa.  Rooms began to fill at the Capri Hotel, where guests enjoyed poolside drinks and accessibility to Nobu's posh outdoor bar.

While many of Nobu's revelers--stuffed with Sushi and swimming in Saki--headed east to Georgica, or across the street to Southampton Social Club (a few even doubled-back to South Pointe, but spye hampton maintains they were lost), a sizable crew remained into the wee hours.  DJs spun classy vocal lounge music until the doors finally shut at shortly after 2am.  One of the last guests to exit was none other than PR extraordinaire, Jonathan Cheban, seen smiling ear-to-ear and chatting it up with Richie Notar.

With the heavy hitters in tow, rain clouds cleering and summer's climatic incalescence finally here, the Nobu nebula is birthing a shooting star.

Rain Hampton

Some locals claim a connection between odd years (ie. 2009, 2011) and weekend rainfall rates.  If this is wishful thinking to wash away tourists, then this weekend proved the superstition false.  Friday night was a typical pre-July 4th evening: Jitneys and Luxury Liners hurdled down Montauk Highway, while Trata, Savannas and Nobu all met expectations.  The one Friday night laggard of note was Dune/Axe Lounge.  Inside sources confirmed to spye hampton that only 33 warm bodies entered the venue!  Said sources opined that the promoters have transplanted their Friday night party to Madame Tong's.  How will Dune respond?

Saturday was met with the same foul weather.  Nevertheless, the well-heeled clientele of Southampton and East Hampton piled into their Range Rovers (umbrellas in hand) for a night on the town.  A flash-flooding rainstorm tore into Wainscott at midnight, dousing the growing line of glitterati outside SL East.  Makeup smeared, white pants turned see-through and skin-tight jeans became grafting procedures.

11:30pm and the lines at South Pointe were stretched out to the street, at 125 Tuckahoe Lane.  21 year-olds, donning $200 designer dress shirts, carted from the Roosevelt Field Mall, were on the premises.  Oddly enough, this appeared to be the exact same crowd who gathered 24-hours earlier, on Friday evening.  Isn't Friday the typical kid's night at this classic Hamptons address, which once housed Tavern?  Shouldn't this crew have been spending Saturday night recovering at their parent's house in Five Towns or Howard Beach?

Despite their lack of a sign (intentional?), Nobu at The Capri delivered for a second straight weekend.  Rain fell on the just and unjust alike, as Donny Deutsch dined in the packed room.  What will Nobu bring to the once vacant location at 281 Montauk Highway, when they are able to leverage their spacious outdoor bar area?  If local folklore proves accurate, it may be several more weekends before the skies clear for the decked-out, daybed clad courtyard to be open to the "public."

Let's all use this Sunday to dry out--literally and figuratively, that is.  There is plenty of steam remaining in the locomotives of the LIRR Cannonballs to fire you back to the East End, for the second-half of June...before the real party begins.  Safe travels, everyone!

Summer, 2011

As the pollen clears from your newly leased Mercedes and thoughts of DOW-10,000 wane, the cry of the Hamptons once again beckons. Here is a list of what is going on amongst the movers and shakers of the East End:

The Palm:
A stodgy pillar of East Hampton, this establishment boasts some of the finest cuts on the South Fork. The night peaks at an early 9:30pm, with notables Jerry Seinfeld, Renee Zellwegger and Roger Ferris, often on hand. Anchored in the corner is Ronald Perelman, a long time friend of the late Howard Gittis (former owner of Savanna's, Southampton), known to dine with a celebrity entourage including, but not limited to Jon Bon Jovi and Robert Downey Jr. Best advice--leave your children with the nanny; this is where the big kids come to play.

Nobu at The Capri Hotel:
Nobu started the summer a half-stride behind, missing almost all of Memorial Day weekend, as they failed to open. Nevertheless, owner Richie Notar (who got his start as a busboy at Studio 54) came through and last weekend proved a phenomenal success. Howard Stern dined with wife Beth Ostrovsky, while Carmello Anthony and crew carried the night into the wee hours of the morning.

The Capri is a special venue. Once a posh cabana-lounge nightclub, commanded by David Sarner (54, Pink Elephant) and Jamie Mulholland (Cain, Surf Lodge), it has now been reconfigured into restaurant/lounge mode. Messy beach sand that once surrounded the outdoor area/pool in the back, has been replaced with smooth pebbles.

Inside, Nobu boasts an open dining area, interrupted only by the bar at the entrance. Behind the bar--which was once the DJ's booth/VIP tables--there are 8 bar-tables surrounded by banquettes. With a sound system strangely familiar to that of Pink Elephant's, Nobu will be packed to its Yellowtail gills. Last call is allegedly at 2am!

Trata:
If anyone needed proof that an outdoor area leads to success in Hamptons nightlife, they need not look further than Trata, in Watermill. About 1 mile East of the turn on Montauk Highway, this restaurant/lounge caters to an affluent crowd of 40-somethings. Rolls Royces and Maseratis adorn the parking lot and the night often goes past 2am.

SL East:
Formerly Lily Pond (formerly Resort), this venue did not fall prey to the open-door disease which for years plagued its neighbor: Star Room. If a 2am lounge is not enough and bottle service exclusivity is desired, this is the only real show in town. Expect to see Paris Hilton and other A-Listers, tucked away in this Wainscott club. If the lot is not full by 1am, either motor on to Surf Lodge or call it a night.

East Hampton Point:
Don't let Sundays get you down. While East Hampton Point was tested with the Day & Night Saturday brunch party in 2010, their famed reggae party on Sundays is a perfect end to your weekend. Live bands hit the back deck at around 2pm and play until after the sun crosses the horizon of Three Mile Harbor. Burgers and Calamari on the deck, while the inside serves up Oysters on the half-shell. Bring your black card because EHP has one of the best wine lists on the East End!

The Elm:
Adjacent to Madame Tong's (which is adjacent to Savannas) and a stones throw from the Southampton train station, The Elm hopes to draw from the Hamptons pool of hedgefunders, models and celebs. As of this weekend however, business was not usual as the venue appears to be flopping and supposedly a general manager quit in disgust. More info to follow...
